«Έχω πει στον άντρα μου, πως αν δεν ήταν εκείνος και τα κορίτσια μου... δεν θα ήθελα να συνεχίσω να ζω έτσι».
Πριν η Rebecca Logan, 41 ετών, νοσήσει από τον κορονοϊό, είχε μια πολυάσχολη και γεμάτη οικογενειακή ζωή. Εργαζόταν ως νοσοκόμας σε ένα τμήμα επειγόντων περιστατικών στη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία και λειτουργούσε παράλληλα της δικής της επιχείρησης ως γυμνάστρια. Αυτό ήταν πριν από δύο χρόνια.
Σήμερα, είναι ως επί το πλείστον ξαπλωμένη στο κρεβάτι, ενώ χρησιμοποιεί αναπηρικό καροτσάκι ή ραβδί για να κυκλοφορεί. Απλές εργασίες, όπως το λούσιμο των μαλλιών της, μπορεί να οδηγήσουν σε έντονη κόπωση και πόνο. «Κάθε μέρα είναι ένας αγώνας», είπε η ίδια σε μια εκδήλωση σχετικά με το σύνδρομο long Covid (μακρά Covid) στο Λονδίνο τον περασμένο μήνα. Η Logan, δεν είναι η μόνη.
Το Γραφείο Εθνικής Στατιστικής του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου ανέφερε την περασμένη Πέμπτη, πως εκτιμάται ότι 1,7 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι ζούσαν με μακροχρόνια Covid στις αρχές Μαρτίου στη χώρα. Ταυτόχρονα, τα κρούσματα έχουν αυξηθεί ανησυχητικά, σε 200.000 το μήνα φέτος, σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα του Politico.
Ποια τα συμπτώματα του long Covid
Σχεδόν οι μισοί από όσους ανέφεραν συμπτώματα πέραν των τεσσάρων εβδομάδων, υποφέρουν για περισσότερο από ένα χρόνο. Τα πιο κοινά συμπτώματα είναι κόπωση, ζαλάδα, δύσπνοια και μυϊκός πόνος.
Ωστόσο, έχουν γίνει γνωστά περίπου 200 συμπτώματα, που επηρεάζουν σχεδόν κάθε όργανο του σώματος, σύμφωνα με τον Brendan Delaney, γενικό γιατρό και πρόεδρο ιατρικής πληροφορικής και λήψης αποφάσεων στο Imperial College του Λονδίνου.
Αυτό που αρχίζει τώρα να τραβάει την προσοχή των κυβερνήσεων είναι ότι η πλειονότητα όσων πάσχουν από μακρά νόσο Covid-19, είναι άτομα νεαρής ηλικίας, μεταξύ 35 και 49 ετών.
Επιπτώσεις στην αγορά εργασίας
Αν και δεν υπάρχουν ακόμη διαθέσιμα στοιχεία που να αξιολογούν τον αντίκτυπο του long Covid στην αγορά εργασίας στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, μια γρήγορη ματιά στα δεδομένα του ONS και στα στατιστικά της απασχόλησης, υποδηλώνει πλήγμα στην οικονομία, επεσήμανε ο Chris Thomas, επικεφαλής της πολιτικής υγείας στο Ινστιτούτο Ερευνών Δημόσιας Πολιτικής (IPPR).
«Από την έναρξη της πανδημίας, έχουμε δει μια πτώση στο μέγεθος της αγοράς εργασίας, λίγο πάνω από 1 εκατομμύριο άτομα, η οποία είναι αρκετά μεγάλη», δήλωσε.
Παγκόσμια επιβάρυνση για τον τομέα της υγείας
Ενώ τα στοιχεία του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου παρέχουν έναν οδηγό για την κλίμακα του προβλήματος —που επί του παρόντος επηρεάζει περίπου το 2,7% του πληθυσμού και πάνω από το 4% του εργατικού δυναμικού— το πραγματικό κοινωνικό και οικονομικό κόστος για τις χώρες παγκοσμίως μπορεί να μην γίνει ποτέ γνωστό.
Αυτό γιατί άνθρωποι που ανέπτυξαν μακρά Covid στο πρώτο κύμα της πανδημίας, δεν μπορούν να το αποδείξουν, επειδή δεν υπήρχαν δωρεάν τεστ εκείνη την εποχή, επεσήμανε η Ann Li, μιλώντας από το Βέλγιο εκ μέρους της Long COVID Europe, ενός συνασπισμού ενώσεων ασθενών.
«Οι εργαζόμενοι στον τομέα της υγείας δεν τους πιστεύουν. Και αυτό είναι ένα μεγάλο πρόβλημα (σε όλη την Ευρώπη)», είπε.
Επιπλέον, εκείνοι που είναι πιο πιθανό να υποφέρουν σιωπηλά, είναι εκείνοι σε χαμηλότερα αμειβόμενες θέσεις εργασίας, σε θέσεις που αντιμετωπίζουν άτομα, όπως εργαζόμενοι σε καταστήματα και καθαρίστριες, που δεν μπόρεσαν να εργαστούν από το σπίτι κατά τη διάρκεια της πανδημίας.
Εμβολιασμός και long Covid
Τα δεδομένα εξακολουθούν να είναι περιορισμένα, αλλά μια πρόσφατη μετα-ανάλυση από την Υπηρεσία Ασφάλειας Υγείας του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου διαπίστωσε ότι ο εμβολιασμός προσφέρει κάποια προστασία έναντι του μακροχρόνιου Covid. Μια μελέτη στη Ρουμανία διαπίστωσε ότι το 57% των ανθρώπων ανέπτυξαν long Covid σε ένα δείγμα όσων είχαν μολυνθεί, από τους οποίους μόλις 1 στους 5 είχε λάβει τουλάχιστον μία δόση εμβολίου. Και στην εξαιρετικά εμβολιασμένη Δανία, μια μελέτη που δεν έχει ακόμη αξιολογηθεί από ομοτίμους διαπίστωσε ότι το 30% είχε συμπτώματα έξι έως εννέα μήνες μετά τη μόλυνση.
Και τα δύο στοιχεία είναι, ωστόσο, υψηλότερα από την εκτίμηση του Παγκόσμιου Οργανισμού Υγείας, ότι περίπου το ένα τέταρτο των ανθρώπων εμφανίζουν συμπτώματα πέραν των τεσσάρων εβδομάδων. Σχεδόν 500 εκατομμύρια περιπτώσεις Covidέχουν αναφερθεί μέχρι σήμερα.
«Αν σκεφτείτε τον αριθμό των ανθρώπων που έχουν μολυνθεί σε όλο τον κόσμο, θα πρέπει να έχετε μόνο ένα μικρό ποσοστό όσων επηρεάζονται μακροπρόθεσμα για να έχουν τεράστιες συνέπειες για την υγεία και την οικονομία», δήλωσε στο POLITICO ο Τζέρεμι Φάραρ, διευθυντής του Wellcome Trust. σε εκδήλωση την Τρίτη.
Με χώρες σε όλη την Ευρώπη να εγκαταλείπουν τα περισσότερα μέτρα για τον κορονοϊό - οι επιστήμονες έχουν προειδοποιήσει ότι τα ποσοστά μόλυνσης θα αυξηθούν.
Και αυτό σημαίνει περισσότερα κρούσματα. Το ONS τόνισε ότι σχεδόν το ένα πέμπτο των περιπτώσεων πιστεύεται ήδη ότι προκαλούνται από την παραλλαγή Ομικρον, η οποία συνεχίζει να αυξάνεται σε όλη την Ευρώπη.
