Νέα ερευνητικά στοιχεία δείχνουν ότι το ανθρώπινο σώμα λειτουργεί με πολύπλοκους τρόπους.
Η μελέτη που δημοσιεύθηκε στην επιθεώρηση «Nature Microbiology» εξέτασε δεδομένα ιατρικών αρχείων που αφορούσαν το μικροβίωμα 1.054 ανθρώπων, οι οποίοι είχαν διαγνωστεί ότι πάσχουν από κατάθλιψη.
Αυτό που διαπίστωσαν είναι ότι άτομα με κατάθλιψη εμφάνιζαν σε χαμηλά επίπεδα δύο βακτηρίδια του εντέρου, και συγκεκριμένα τα Coprococcus και Dialister, είτε λάμβαναν αντικαταθλιπτικά είτε όχι. Αντιθέτως, εκείνοι που χαρακτήριζαν την ψυχική τους υγεία «καλή» εμφάνιζαν υψηλά επίπεδα.
«Η σχέση μεταξύ του μικροβιακού μεταβολισμού του εντέρου και της ψυχικής υγείας είναι ένα αμφιλεγόμενο θέμα. Η ιδέα ότι οι μικροβιακοί μεταβολίτες μπορούν να αλληλεπιδράσουν με τον εγκέφαλό μας - και επομένως να επηρεάσουν τη συμπεριφορά και τα συναισθήματα - είναι ενδιαφέρουσα, αλλά η επικοινωνία μικροβίων - εγκεφάλου στο έμβρυο έχει εξερευνηθεί ως επί το πλείστον σε ζωικά μοντέλα, με αποτέλεσμα να υστερεί η επιστημονική γνώση σε ό,τι αφορά τον ανθρώπινο οργανισμό.
«Στη μελέτη μας σε επίπεδο πληθυσμού εντοπίσαμε διάφορες ομάδες βακτηρίων που συνυπάρχουν με την ανθρώπινη κατάθλιψη και την ποιότητα ζωής σε όλους τους πληθυσμούς», δήλωσε ο επικεφαλής ερευνητής Dr Jeroen Raes του Ινστιτούτου Βιοτεχνολογίας της Φλάνδρας και του Καθολικού Πανεπιστημίου της Leuven. Παρ' όλα αυτά, η επιστημονική ομάδα δεν έχει ακόμη καταφέρει να ξεκλειδώσει τον «μηχανισμό» που κρύβεται πίσω από αυτήν τη σύνδεση, αναγνωρίζοντας ποιο είναι το αίτιο και συνεπώς το αιτιατό. Ειδικότερα, η μελέτη δεν αποδεικνύει ότι τα μικρόβια είναι «ένοχα» για την εκδήλωση της κατάθλιψης. Αντιθέτως, εξίσου πιθανό είναι η ψυχική υγεία να επηρεάζει το μικροβίωμα του εντέρου.
Αξίζει πάντως να σημειωθεί ότι σε πειράματα που ακολούθησαν, ο Dr Raes και η ομάδα του ανακάλυψαν ότι τα μικρόβια του εντέρου μπορούν να επηρεάσουν το ανθρώπινο νευρικό σύστημα παράγοντας νευροδιαβιβαστές, που είναι κρίσιμοι για την καλή ψυχική υγεία
