«Οι νοσηλευτές αποτελούν τη ραχοκοκαλιά των συστημάτων υγείας και είναι ζωτικής σημασίας για τη διασφάλιση ότι οι ασθενείς λαμβάνουν υψηλής ποιότητας, επαγγελματική φροντίδα όταν τη χρειάζονται», ανέφερε σε ανακοίνωση η Επίτροπος για την Υγεία
και την Ασφάλεια των Τροφίμων, Στέλλα Κυριακίδη, με αφορμή πρωτοβουλίας της για να στηριχθούν οι νέοι Ευρωπαίοι νοσηλευτές.
Στην Ελλάδα, πολλοί τούς αποκαλούν «νοσοκόμους- νοσοκόμες», όρο που στην πραγματικότητα παραπέμπει σε εργαζόμενους χωρίς ανώτερη εκπαίδευση που λειτουργούν ως βοηθοί. Πρόκειται όμως για νοσηλευτές-τριες. Επιστήμονες της Υγείας που ολοκληρώνουν ανώτατες σπουδές 4ετούς φοιτήσεως, λαμβάνουν ειδικότητες, κάνουν μεταπτυχιακά και διδακτορικά, συμμετέχουν σε κλινικές μελέτες και γενικά έχουν επιστημονική και επαγγελματική κατάρτιση υψηλού επιπέδου. Όταν φτάνουν να εργαστούν στα συστήματα υγείας, ωστόσο, υποαμείβονται και συναντούν δύσκολες συνθήκες.
Για το λόγο αυτό, όλο και λιγότεροι νέοι στην Ευρώπη επιλέγουν το συγκεκριμένο επάγγελμα που απαιτεί άλλωστε κυλιόμενες βάρδιες, κόπο και ευθύνη.
Τώρα, συμφωνία μεταξύ Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής και Περιφερειακού Γραφείου Ευρώπης του ΠΟΥ, που υπεγράφη τις ημέρες αυτές, έχει στόχο τη στήριξη του νοσηλευτικού επαγγέλματος και την προσέλκυση νέων σε αυτό.
Αναφερόμενη στην πρωτοβουλία αυτή η Επίτροπος σχολίασε ότι «αποτελεί ένδειξη της δέσμευσής μας να αντιμετωπίσουμε τα σοβαρά ζητήματα που σχετίζονται με τους εργαζόμενους στον τομέα της υγείας που αντιμετωπίζουν πολλά κράτη μέλη και να βελτιώσουμε την ανθεκτικότητα των συστημάτων υγείας σε ολόκληρη την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση Υγείας».
