4 reasons why you should visit Greece in the spring

Greece is at its best during the spring months when the crowds are sparce and the temperatures tolerable.

Spring is the right season to visit Greece. The temperatures are relatively low, compared to summer months, the tourist sites are less crowded, food and accommodation are affordable. And of course the weather is still warm enough to enjoy the sea, if you are so inclined.

There are multiple options to choose from when visiting Greece for a spring break. Especially in the overlooked mainland, that deserves your attention.

Mani, Peloponnese

Another peninsula, Mani in Pelopennese is the complete opposite of Pilio. An arid land of medieval forts, miniscule churches and sparce vegetation, where olive groves and prickly pear cactuses provide for the few touches of greenery, it is astoundingly beautiful.

During summer, Mani gets very hot, so you are lucky if you visit in spring. You can explore the sites -the churches in gothic style erected at the time of the Catalan occupation, the iconic tower houses, the small villages, the gorges and the beaches, at your own pace. Don’t forget to sample the local sea food, fresh from the sea, buy olive oil straight from the people that tend the centuries old groves, the most well known product of the area.

Meteora, central Greece

Meteora is not for everyone. Huge rocks created by erosion some millions of years ago play host to one the largest monastic communities worldwide. Over 20 monasteries are perched atop these towering rock formations, all of them founded hundreds of years ago.

Only six of the monasteries are open to visitors and they are well worth the visit. The buildings, some in ruins, are impressive but the views are the real winners here.

The feeling of being suspended between earth and sky -meteoro means suspended- is overwhelming but do not allow it to blind you to the beauty of the land around Meteora. Trikala is the city that is closer to the monasteries and it deserves a closer look. There is also the not so small matter of the wineries around Meteora where you can sample some excellent Greek wines and spirits.

Nafpaktos, central Greece

Situated on a pretty bay on the north of the Gulf of Corinth, Nafpaktos is the perfect getaway if you wish for quality, authenticity and traqulity. Home to various historical landmarks, centuries old buildings, town houses, an ottoman mosque and a well-preserved Venetian castle that overlooks the port, Nafpaktos is a both beautiful and family friendly.

There is an organized beach only a few steps away from the central square, but if you feel more adventurous there are more beaches down the road and the mountainous area around the town is well worth a visit.

Pilio, central Greece

The Pilio peninsula is practically impossible not to fall in love with. Steeped in ancient myth, the land of the centaurs, a race of half-man and half-horse beings central in Greek mythology, it provides the perfect combo. Wooded slopes, a mini ski resort, beautiful villages and pristine beaches. You can stay in one of the numerous hotels and B&Bs that are available for tourists and roam the area. Hiking is one of the best ways to explore and enjoy the area during spring when the apple trees are in foul bloom. If you don’t mind the slight chill, the Aegean sea is as inviting as it gets and the winding mountain roads provide for picture perfect views.
