Athenians’ verdict: The best and worst beaches in Attica revealed

Athens’ beaches rated highest and lowest on Google

When one imagines a seaside retreat, thoughts often drift towards idyllic islands or classic summer getaways. Yet, Attica, the region encompassing Greece’s capital, is home to a plethora of beaches that cater to a variety of tastes and preferences.

Previously, we have detailed the finest free beaches in Attica, those unspoiled oases where one can lay a towel and swim without incurring any cost. Conversely, we have also explored the best organized beaches in the region, those that proudly fly the Blue Flag, indicating superior water quality and amenities.

As with many things in life, some choices are better than others, a fact quickly gleaned from the beach reviews on Google.

Following a concise survey, iEidiseis identified both the highest and lowest-rated beaches in Attica, as judged by Google users.

Schinias Beach

Situated less than an hour from central Athens, Schinias Beach is celebrated for its expansive golden sands that stretch for kilometers. It stands as Attica’s longest beach, featuring both lively beach bar areas with sunbeds and quieter, unregulated spots for those seeking a more natural experience.

It is hardly surprising that Schinias Beach commands the highest rating among Attica’s coastal offerings, boasting an impressive 4.6 out of 5 stars on Google.

This picturesque beach is annually awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for its pristine waters and excellent facilities. Schinias has also served as a filming location for notable Greek films such as “Abuse of Power” featuring Nikos Kourkoulos and “I4 – Loaf and Camouflage.”

Adjacent to the beach is the Schinias Forest, where lush pine trees extend all the way to the shore. It is one of Greece’s largest pine forests, and the area’s wetlands form a significant ecological habitat. Due to its substantial environmental value, the broader area is designated a national park and is part of the Natura 2000 network.

The Worst Beach in Attica

In stark contrast, according to Google users, the lowest-rated beach in Attica is Elliniko Beach, which has garnered a disappointing score of 3.3 out of 5 stars.

Below are some typical reviews from visitors:

“Congratulations to the municipality of Elliniko. The seaside resort reeks. They must be dumping sewage into the sea. The beach is littered with garbage bins that haven’t been emptied for a week. Perhaps the municipality wants to sell it off cheaply and has neglected cleanliness to this extent. It’s the shame of the beaches.”

“A reasonable choice for a swim, with notable pros and cons. Pros: sandy beach with clean, shallow waters, sheltered from waves, relatively easy parking, and not very well-known. Cons: being a free municipal beach also means neglect from the municipality: lots of garbage, no facilities for coffee, snacks, drinking water, showers, toilets… generally an image of complete abandonment. So come as well-prepared as possible: coolers, ice packs, take-away coffee, etc.”

“I’ve been going to this beach for exercise for seven years. The sight I encountered a week ago was disheartening. Only trash and general neglect. Obviously, we are to blame for all the litter, but the municipality does nothing either. Simply a disgrace. I am sure the depth of disgust here is boundless.”
